Boulder Poetry Tribe is a website about celebrating the Boulder Poetry Scene…
In Boulder, Colorado there have always been a lot of people who love poetry. It has a lot to do with being home to Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, which was started by Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the 70’s. But also because of the University of Colorado there is always a steady flow of fresh energy from young students excited to express themselves. There are well as established institutions like Beat Book Shop owner Tom Peter’s “So You’re a Poet” open reading series, which has been going on every Monday night (now at Wesley Chapel) for over 30 years. Since 2011 Innisfree Poetry Bookstore & Cafe, one of three poetry focused bookstores in the country, has been a hub for the community and features its own successful open mic series on Tuesday nights. For several years poets have gathered at midnight in the alley behind the Pearl Street Mall for the monthly Full Moon Reading. And featured poets perform with live musicians every month at The Laughing Goat’s Jazzetry event sponsored by ALOC Media. Beyond Academia Free Skool regularly offers free workshops on honing your poetic and performance craft, and recently a writing community called Writer’s Block has been meeting every Wednesday at Block 1750 to give each other prompts and write together. For the last year the Boulder Weekly has been publishing work from local poets in their ‘Words’ section. There are always new things being started here, and if you add in nearby Denver and it’s own dynamic poetry scene there is never a shortage of ongoing featured readings, events, slams, workshops, publications, communities and fellow poets to call your tribe. For the latest crowd-sourced information on the Scene check out the Boulder Poetry Tribe group on Facebook.
If you’re new to Boulder, thinking of visiting, or been part of the scene for years, welcome. Please contact us if you have any questions. I hope you find this site enjoyable, informative, and inspirational!
